No Room…Still

1170x750xhomeless.jpg_qitok_crX5Ue5G.pagespeed.ic.PYpj5Zuy-iWe read about it in the papers. There is not enough housing available in California to meet the current need; there are roughly 600,000 units needed to meet current demand. We know people are being displaced by high rents and/or lack of availability. Our congregation helps support Our House Shelter, an emergency shelter for people who don’t have a home. It’s an important part of meeting the housing crisis. But what happens when people get back on their feet and cannot find a place to actually “set up house”?

There are many possible solutions to the housing crisis and all of them are needed. Is there something our congregation could do with other congregations to help mitigate the risk for people who are still sheltered but under threat of displacement? Our faith doesn’t happen in the vacuum of our sanctuary. It is meant to be lived in our lives, on our streets and in our communities. Just learning about the realities of the housing crisis in our state and in our region is an important first step to living our faith.

Our Organizing Team invites all of you to lunch and small group conversations about the work we are doing together and might do with others to make “more room at the Inn”. On January 13th after worship, we will gather for lunch and conversation. People have opinions about housing, but the urgency of the crisis calls for more than opinions.

Through The Checkpoint: The Pilgrim

Despite conflict and occupation pilgrims continue to flood to Jerusalem, many disengaged from the conflicts roaring outside and within church walls, as perhaps is the case with this pilgrim, who prays over the Stone of Anointing where, tradition holds, Jesus' body was anointed before his burial.

“What do we mean by, when everyday we pray the Lord’s Prayer?  We say, “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”  So, we have to bring justice to earth and do something on earth, that is what Jesus taught us.  Also I refuse, when I speak they tell me you’re are part of the peace churches.  I refuse to say, oh the Quakers are a peace church.  All churches should be peace churches because violence was contrary to the mind of Christ.”

Through the Checkpoint is a multi-media project created by Rev. Katie Archibald Woodward who writes,

“It is created in partnership with the Creative Visions Foundation and is serving in tandem with ongoing efforts to foster justice and peace for all living in the Palestinian-Israeli region by the continued call for equity, human dignity, and the pursuit of a coexistence without occupation.

I hope to help our global community gain a fuller picture of life in Palestine/Israel and motivate viewers, like you, to join movements to end a dehumanizing status quo and catalyze peace and equity for Palestinians, Bedouins, and Jewish Israelis alike. ”

The Christ child was born into a time and place in which there was “a dehumanizing status quo.” The season of Advent prepares us for Christmas. Advent is a time of unhiding, revealing. Advent calls us to see, look and discover. You are invited to see, look and discover something hard and hopeful about the Holy Land in Through the Checkpoint
