We are on a journey of faith and are open to discovering the guidance and wisdom of God on the journey. Imagine we are on a river whose course carries us through the topography of faith development. What are the sign posts on our journey?

Mark 8:34-38

He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, ‘If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? Those who are ashamed of me and of my words* in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.’

Lecture Series

First Christian Church of Pomona is part of a denomination Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). What do we believe? We don’t ascribe to dogma or doctrine, but simply affirm that Jesus is the Christ. Are we conservative? No. Fundamentalist? Definitely not. Liberal? Well, honestly, we have a heritage of faith that is born in the Enlightenment, when reason and discovery was valued. These are classic liberal values and not a political party. Our denomination is more liberal because we read the scriptures in a particular way; reason informs our interpretation through scholarship, academic research in languages, archeology and history.

We are on a journey of faith and are open to discovering the guidance and wisdom of God on the journey. Imagine we are on a river whose course carries us through the topography of faith development. What are the sign posts on our journey? If we don’t have a dogma/doctrine to define the banks of the river, what defines our journey right now? Five sign posts will shape our shared worship Sept. 30-Oct. 28.
