Pilgrimage to Manzanar
From 12:00 am to 12:00 amManzanar is the site of a World War II prison camp where Japanese Americans were held captive. There were 10 of these prisons, euphemistically called “Relocation Centers”. Whether you camp at Diaz Lake or get a motel room in nearby Lone Pine, this church event is planned to help participants better understand the cultural conditions that made it possible for our nation to institutionalize prejudice, of which racism is one form. The Manzanar National Historical Site is operated by the National Park Service. Together with volunteers, NPS has rebuilt some of the structures and mapped out where the buildings were located. In preparation for the pilgrimage, the following are recommended reading: The graphic novel, They Called Us Enemy (George Takei) and Farewell to Manzanar (Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston and James D. Houston). Both are accessible to middle school-aged children, as well as suitable for adults. A copy of each will be in the church library. Manzanar is about 3 hours north of Pomona on Hwy 395. You can choose to arrive on Friday or Saturday morning. The visit to Manzanar will take place early in the afternoon on Saturday to accommodate those who arrive on Saturday morning. After our visit, we will return to the campground for some activities and relaxation. Sunday morning will include an outdoor worship service. If you plan to camp and need equipment, there will likely be enough for you to borrow. If you are interested in participating, please email the Office (fcc@fccpomona.org) so we can include you in planning emails.
